Beginning with a context setting preamble the opening third of Red Nights of the Gestapo features some interesting and experimental cinematography with apparently random zooms, unusual camera angles and homing in on seemingly inconsequential aspects of the scenes such as close ups of statues and ornaments and so on. This is a film that clearly sets out to make an artistic statement.
With a story concerning a plotting bourgeois intelligentsia and their sexual habits this is a film that obviously attempts to make a philosophical point about the decadence of the kingmakers of the Nazi regime.
Instead, and despite of higher production values than those typically associated with the subgenre, the film fails on both counts. Not as sleazy as some of the darker and exploitative entries to the cycle this bordello based effort is quite entertaining but more often than not comes across more as unintentionally funny than shocking or thought provoking. It is a film that succeeds in both being trashy in a funny kind of way and funny in a trashy kind of way.
