A tasteless, plot-free exploitation movie that tries to pass itself off as serious social docudrama, this 1980 Shaw Bros. production directed by Mou Tun Fei/TF Mous of MAN BEHIND THE SUN fame is as nasty as any Cat. III movie during the genre's heyday in the 90's. Purported to make viewers understand and sympathize with the unlucky fates illegal immigrants suffer when they risk their lives swimming their way into HK, Mou is more interested in lengthy scenes of physical and sexual degradation of increasing intensity than any serious sociological or political investigation worthy of this subject.
"Lost Souls" (1980) - триллер о группе незаконных имигрантов из Китая, попавших в рабство к гонконгским бандитам, которые их пытают, насилуют и убивают самыми изощренными способами в течении всего фильма. Из 6 фильмов снятых Тунь Фэй Моу до "Потерянных душ" ближе всего по духу к нему фильм . "Люди позади солнца" можно описать этим же самым предложением, заменив "имигрантов" на "военопленных", а "бандитов" на "японских солдат".

For the first 30 minutes, it looks and feels like Mou wasn't lying. The physical and mental exhaustion of the long swim, the police raid of the the illegal immigrant boat landing, and how the three protagonists escaped but then are cheated by locals who held them for ransom are convincing in that all the basic outline and details (all the illegal immigrants do the hard work of rowing the boat while the ring leader just sit there doing the commanding, plastic bags of personal items and food stash tied on the shoulders) of the II experience are there.
But once those three escaped the first group of inept kidnappers, all this "realism" goes out the window when they end up in the hands of Chan Sheng and his sadistic gang. When a naked woman is shown tied to a chair and tortured with burning candle wax that's followed by repeated agonizing, slow-mo shots of her getting tossed around by thugs and the camera's very particular interest of what's between her legs in all the shots in this sequence, Mou finally drops the veneer and concentrate on the movie's real raison d'etre. There's no more need for any plot or boring pretense, just one scene after another with the gang performing degrading tortures to get the phone numbers from the victims so they can contact their relatives to extract ransom money.
Anyway, this is time for me to shed my own veneer of any attempt at serious review and say this is grand exploitation entertainment, complete with all the schizo elements similar to GOODBYE UNCLE TOM that makes it fascinating. Mou is definitely channeling SALO here, with the nameless group of II's that's naked for most of the runtime and recreation of the lineup examination of naked women (but nothing equivalent for men here) and sodomy played for laughs. The heterosexual males are definitely useless here. Fighting back never occured to them despite their advantage in numbers. Only after the the sodomy do they get into action: unintended subtext?
I've read Mou's lengthy interviews and was almost convinced with his dead-serious rationale for making MAN BEHIND THE SUN and BLACK SUN; I wonder how he'll defend this one. He shows lots of glee in presenting all this vileness with nasty scenes that are stretched longer than they should (eg. women getting sprayed with water that alternates crotch shots and closeups of their faces in pain). It's amazing how this is getting by without any warning on the package and no re-rating (there's only the ancient "Not Suitable for Children" tag). Whatever merit anyone finds with this movie, it's no doubt that its place in the annals of HK exploitation has been restored with this release.
